Exhibition catalogue: Wulz Photography: Trieste, the Family, the Atelier

Exhibition catalogue, Silvana Editoriale, 2024

This photographic journey is marked by events that placed the city of Trieste at the center of the international scene. The Wulz photographers captured the milestones of their city's economic, demographic, social and cultural development, through a privileged lens, while running their Trieste photography studio (1868-1981) for more than a century.

This volume presents nearly three hundred images, including photographic prints, negatives, vintage, documents and objects from the archives of the Wulz Photographic Studio - preserved today in the Alinari Archives. It also explores other materials from public institutions, such as the Wolfsoniana in Genoa, the Revoltella Museum and the Civic Museums of History and Art of Trieste and private collections.

In addition to a unprecedented look at the history of the city between the 19th and 20th centuries, the exhibition offers a new reading of the Wulz's photographic production. Most notably, the photographs taken by sisters Wanda and Marion, during the last stage of the studio's operation, provide a concrete view of the progressive changes affecting the identity of women, who in the early decades of the twentieth century experienced a fundamental era on the path towards emancipation and independence.
